Inside voices
For hundreds of years artists have mined the rich stories of the Bible. As an artist Randy Horst is interested in focusing on the emotional content of those stories, creating psychological portraits that explore a wide range of our human condition.INSIDE VOICES is a long standing series of mixed media and collage drawings done as triptychs inspired by the lives of Biblical and Christan characters. They are not an attempt to create a representation of an historical narrative – rather they explore what emotions those characters may have felt. Our emotional lives are very complex. Working in triptychs allows for examination of multiple emotions derived from the same narrative source through a variety of expressions and gestures. The triptych form also encourages a visual dialog between each of the three images as well as with the viewer. Some of the images follow part of the arc of the narrative source, while others just explore the broader range of emotions implied by the source. Some triptychs are also initially inspired by personal or broader social current events.

Each drawing series offers a new challenge to find an appropriate technical and media approach. This often includes a significant amount of experimentation. Each triptych is an attempt to create an appropriate balance between technical control and discovery, between illusion and flatness, and between grace and disruption.Individual INSIDE VOICES drawings on paper are 15 x 19 in., making the figurative elements close to life sized. Most drawings include conté plus any number of other media, including ink (India, Sumi, or Akua), charcoal, spray paint, cyanotype, colored pencil, oil pastel, watercolor, and/or collage. Most commonly the drawings are done on a colored ground.
